Obituary for James A. "Jimmy" Travers

James A. "Jimmy" Travers
James A. Travers (Jimmy) was born on March 16, 1929 in Harlem to his parents James B. Travers and Ann Phillipus. He was a Twin. His brother Richard (who predeceased him) was born several minutes before him. When he was 18 months old, his mother passed away and his father raised him and his brother. He attended Fredrick Douglas J.H.S. and Seward Park H.S. where he met the love of his life, Selene Barrow.
After high school he enlisted in the US Army and served as a Paratrooper Sgt. First Class in the Korean War with the 82nd Airborne “Rakkasans.” Upon returning from the war, he married his love Selene and had three children. They were married 62 years until his passing. Jimmy worked for the MTA New York City Transit Department of Subways for 27 years and at the same time he worked for the Board of Education Custodial Staff. He was retired for 29 years.
He loved his family and that was one of the most important things to him. He would do anything for the family. Since he was an avid reader and with his life experience he knew about a great many things and could give you a story about anything. His love, intelligence, laughter, great stories and strength will truly be missed. He is survived by his loving wife Selene, son Phillip, daughters Ann and Donna, grandson John, daughter-in-law Patricia, nieces Lagatha and Robin, God-daughter Andrea and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, in-laws, family and friends.
May He Rest In Peace.
