Obituary for Kathleen Hurley

HURLEY, Kathleen born April 11, 1934 passed away peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2019 at the age of 85. She was the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Coyne, proud immigrants from Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland. Also the younger sister (and marathon gaming partner) to deceased Marie "Dee" Murrin.

Wife of deceased husband Jim and mother to deceased son Brian. She is survived by her children Jim (Celia, granddaughter Caroline), Colleen Schwartz (Tom, grandson James), Kevin (Angela Reynoso), Maura (Richard Saccoliti) and Sean (Carmen Valentin).

Surviving family on Jim's side is brother Pete, (Joanne) and brother Jerry, (Eileen) and all their respective offspring. Also surviving, the Murrin family of sister Dee and deceased husband Tom.

Born and raised in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, ‘Yorkville Kate’ moved to the Bronx after marrying her beloved Jim. Together they lived and raised their family in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx. In her younger years, ‘Kathleen’ was active in the community as a volunteer Reading Mom and AV Assistant for St. Benedict's School. She also worked with the Christian Mothers. More recently, ‘Kay’ ended a long tenure of volunteer work with Calvary Hospital. She never truly left her cherished Manhattan and was ever eager to enjoy the dining, art, music and film options it provided. As always, lipstick and Chanel No. 5 would be in order.

With a quick wit and a talent for drawing, she honored every birthday by rendering a personal caricature that hung prominently to celebrate the honoree. A fan of the arts, Kay loved the opera and her traditional Irish music. (As a sure way to give herself some space, she'd raise the volume and watch the kids disperse).

Despite her Irish upbringing, she was well known for her fabulous Italian meatballs and sausage, which fed the multitude of teams and patrons of Hurley's Bar. In being a devotee of the Turner Classic Film Channel - she'd alert you if a "goodie" was on for that evening and was unable to turn away from her favorite Bette Davis, even if she had seen her films numerous times before.

She will be dearly missed.

MEMORIAL SERVICES will be in the Bronx at Sisto Funeral Home on Friday, November 15th from 2-5pm and from 7-9pm. Mass to be held at St. Benedict's Church on Saturday, Nov 16th at 10:30am with burial immediately following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.

The Family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Kay's honor to the American Cancer Society or to Sing for Hope.
