He would fish and explore the beach, which started his love of the ocean. He watched The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau and had many books on ocean life and diving. At age 7, John wanted a scuba tank and wanted to take scuba lessons. At age 12, John took his Open Water Class with his cousin Bob.

or just diving for lobster or collecting old bottles in the Sound. John also enjoyed diving with Carolina Beach Scuba where one of his favorite dives was the Meg Ledge.
