Obituary for Herbert Goldstein

Herbert K. Goldstein was born in Brooklyn, New York to Jack and Gloria Goldstein on January 25, 1943.

Herb often expressed fond memories of his first five years, about which he spoke of being surrounded by loving parents and doting grandparents. The untimely death of his mother Gloria wounded Herb deeply in ways that followed him throughout life.

Herb’s dad Jack also deeply suffered the loss of Gloria and given the demands of his long work hours, it was decided that it would be best for Herb to stay for a time with Gloria’s sister and her husband. Herb’s time in Pennsylvania found him surrounded with cousins who took him under their collective wing and along with involving him in rambunctious mischief, also taught Herb to read before he started school. When Jack remarried, Herb happily returned to life in New York, where the family was joined by new stepmother Shirley and soon after by Herb's younger brother, David.

Herb always excelled in school and graduated Columbia University with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and was later awarded a scholarship to attend New York University where he earned a master’s degree in social work. Herb often recounted tales of his time in college and the jobs he took on to make ends meet. Favorites include stories of his time as deli man where he took pride in his ability to stuff more pickles in a jar than any of his colleagues and of his time working the Christmas rush for the Post Office, the highlight of which had to have been the time he stopped a Post vehicle on a gentle hill without properly setting the brake and then having to chase the truck down the hill.

But of course the bulk of Herb’s career was served with the New York City Department of Social Services Human Resources Department where his lifelong concern for the little guy manifested itself in his work as a Case Investigator. Herb also spent a number of years as a Grievances Representative for Social Services Employees Union Local 371. After serving the City for more than thirty years, Herb retired as a manager.

Herb loved to travel and did a good amount of that early in his relationship with Judith Carter-Goldstein who Herb married in 2002. Herb enjoyed a lifelong love of the water and always found it difficult to pass any pool or lake or stream or the ocean without "taking a dip," as he called it, often to the delight and embarrassment of his children. During his last ten years, Herb split his time between New York and Florida, where a part of every day was spent in the pool.

During his life Herb, knew the love of three great women: his first wife Carol with whom he fathered son, Todd; Anna, with whom he fathered daughter, Aimee and whose son Kevin, Herb raised as his own; and of course Herb leaves behind his loving wife and faithful companion, Judith Carter-Goldstein. Herb will be held in loving memory by all his kids along with daughters son-in-law, Lindsay, Brooke and son-in-law Raymond as well as by stepdaughter, Kimberly. Herb will also be verily missed by his grandchildren, Emma, Hannah, Boden, Zahria, Ryder, Zyaire, and Otto.
