Gilberto Benitez was born on August 13, 1931 in Naguabo, Puerto Rico to Benedicta Mendez and Luis Benitez. He was the eldest of eight children. He is survived by his wife Aurea, children Gilberto Jr., Maribel, Claritza, and son-in-law Alfred, grandchildren Johnathan, Cristina, Skyler, and Kyle. Great grandchildren Marcus, Jeremiah, Talijah, Aniah, Sanai, Isaiah, Sydney, and Kelis. He is also survived by his siblings Miguel Benitez, and Carmen Rosario, and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

When Gilberto moved to New York from Puerto Rico, he worked as a mixer at different baking companies in Brooklyn. He had a hardworking nature, and was a generous, kind, and loving family-oriented man. He was always seen with a smile on his face and possessed a positive and warm presence. He was truly a delight to everyone that had the privilege of being around him. The things that brought him joy in life were quality time with family and friends, nature, being around animals, fishing, swimming, reading, listening to music, watching wrestling and baseball games, and traveling back home to Puerto Rico among other places.

Gilberto Benitez (age 90) passed on January 1, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones at home peacefully. His family deeply appreciates the kindness and love people have sent through their heartfelt messages and condolences.
