Obituary for Erma Louise Daley

Erma Louise Romney Daley was born on October 25, 1942, to Allanby Romney and Ilva Romney in Anguilla, West Indies. She was the first of seven siblings: Blondel, Vandyke, Bernadette, Maycille, Dolores and Claudel. Being the first child, she was a role model and would reach out to her siblings in the most generous ways.

Erma attended the Ole Road Elementary School in South Hill, Anguilla. She was one of the first from the Village of Blowing Point to attend Ole Valley Secondary School five miles away; she traveled by bicycle as public transportation did not exist.

Her career in nursing began in St. Kitts, W.I., where she immigrated in 1961 to attend nursing school. She graduated and spent nine years at Cunningham Hospital.

In 1970, Erma immigrated to the Bronx, New York, and worked at Arthur C. Logan Hospital for seven years. While there, she met and married her husband Lorraine Earl Daley. From their union of 47 years they raised three daughters: Erlin, Althea and Nicole, along with raising her niece, Ethelie.

In 1977, she transferred to Albert Einstein Hospital and worked there until she retired in 2002. But still she worked as a school nurse on a per diem basis for an additional six years. Erma was a believer in education, and she did volunteer work at schools PS 68 and JHS 142 with their reading programs. She was also President of the Parent Teacher’s Association, and conducted fundraisers for programs while her children were in school.

Erma grew up in a Christian home and loved the Lord and the Methodist Church. During her childhood she was a faithful member and played an active role in the Methodist Church. That faith continued throughout her life.

Erma joined Asbury United Methodist Church in 1978. She was always an active member, working on several committees. She coordinated the Summer Bible Day Camp for many years, and at various times was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, Treasurer, Anniversary Committee member, President of the United Methodist Women, and Lay Speaker. She studied her Bible, always attended Bible study, Methodist conferences and courses while also supporting events at other churches.

Erma was grateful to God for all the blessings he bestowed on her through her friends, family and church. She was a wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, nurse, cherished friend, and church member. Fond memories will be cherished by her husband Lorraine Earl Daley; children Erlin Daley, Althea Parker, Nicole Daley, and niece Ethelie Aruoture; sister Dolores Romney-Lake and family; brother Claudel Romney and family; son-in-law Jawan S. Parker; grandsons Miles, Cole, Quinn, and Grayson; granddaughter Kennedy; cousins Brenda Romney Martin and Judith Romney; many nieces and nephews, including Salubi, Abdul, Nouhu, Kenneth, Andrew, and Nicola; and wonderful great nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered with love by many cousins (the Franklins, the Romneys, the Hughes, the Niles, and the Richardsons) across the world (Curaçao, Holland, England, and Anguilla).
