Obituary for Emerita Ramirez

Emerita Ramirez, beloved mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, transitioned peacefully on August 3rd, 2022.

Emerita, lovingly known as Mary, was born in Puerto Rico to Isaias and Carmen Rivera on October 9th, 1940. Mary contributed to our rich history, as a member of the “Great Migration”, one of the earliest waves of Puerto Ricans who traveled to New York in search of a better life following the end of the Great Depression; making her an original Nuyorican at age 5.

Mary is survived by her seven children, Angel, Peter, Carmen, Ofelia, Daniel, Emerita, and Javier. She is also survived by her older brother Oscar and her sister Juanita as well as countless nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Besides bringing joy to anyone who met her, with her infectious smile; she served as a true Matriarch, the glue that connected her very large family. Her bright personality and generosity touched generations and the impact she had on those who loved her will be etched in our hearts forever.
