Obituary for Carmen Lillian Olan

Carmen was a mother, daughter, sister, wife , and friend to many. But her most cherished role was as a mother to nine children, grandma to thirteen grandchildren, and great grandma of seven. She was the matriarch and pillar of the family. Mom loved and adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She taught us all how to survive, how not to let anyone take advantage of us but always help when we could. She was an independent and strong woman. Like a mountain, she always stood tall and proud of her children and the family she raised all by herself. There were times when we looked up at that mountain, knew it was too steep to climb and challenge, so out of respect we would step back and not chance climbing it. We dared not test the waters.

Our mother always made sure we were well fed and had clean clothes. Our life wasn’t always perfect but she always made sure that we had each other and would be there for each other no matter what. She would say that together we were more powerful than separated. She taught us values and how to survive in this world even if one comes from nothing. Throughout her daily life Mom taught the girls not only how to be good women but also how to have the strength and courage that is often perceived in men. She was woman, hear her roar!

Our Faith comes from our mother. She loved God and always spoke of His greatness and love. She taught us to give to those less fortunate even though at times there was barely enough for us. She would feed any stray animal she encountered. Mom never thought twice about feeding the neighborhood kids. And, my goodness, there were many! They all loved coming to our home and our celebrations because they could feel the genuine love and kindness that emanated from Mom.

Gracias Mami y Abuela.
Que Dios te bendiga, te favorezca y te acompañe, siempre.
