Obituary for Carmen A. Navas

Carmen Navas was born in Ponce Puerto Rico on January 10, 1940. She was the only daughter of Jose Claudio Ortiz and Felicita Borrero. She was the second child and sister to Wiso Ortiz, Wito Ortiz and Mon Oritz.

Carmen Navas came to New York in 1959 and took up residency in the Bronx. She successfully taught herself English and went on to gain two master’s degrees; one from Lehman College and the City University of New York.

While going to college and raising two sons, she worked as crossing guard. Once she graduated, she diligently served the Bronx community as a bilingual teacher for over 35 years. She also served as Guardians de Ninos. Her students have praised her for their successful careers.

Her hobbies included artistic works, dancing, and spending time with her family. She was most proud of being Queen Ponce Puerto Rico and for representing her place of Ponce as well as the Bronx for the Puerto Rican Day Parade 2009.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard and Walter and daughter-in-law, Shannon Navas.
