Obituary for Gloria McNeal


Gloria McNeal of Bronx, NY died Friday, December 29, 2017 at Isabella Rehabilitation at the age 81. She was born October 9, 1936, the daughter of Joseph Mapp and Durcella Joseph, in Codrington Village, Barbuda. Gloria was also known as “Sister McNeal” and/or “Mother McNeal”.

Gloria migrated to New York in search of the American Dream and a bright future in the summer of 1957. She served as house and caregiver to several affluent families during 1960’s. During this decade, she developed a love and passion for cooking and baking. She used her passion for cooking and baking to serve many souls in the Harlem and Bronx communities. Prior to her dedicated service to the individuals in the Harlem and Bronx communities, she met and married Andrew C. McNeal and they had a son name Elijah L. McNeal in 1978. Andrew McNeal preceded her in death on September 14, 1979.

Gloria was a champion of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was not ashamed to proclaim the goodness and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ to everyone and anyone. She lived the golden rule “Do to others what you want them to do to you” Matthew 7:12. She lived a life that was selfless and served others with her wisdom, kind words, and a hot meal. She was blessed to serve the souls and individuals with her lifelong friend and sister in Christ, Evangelist Emma Blake from 1989 to 2015. Over three decades, she served her family and community with compassion, love, and delicious carrot cakes and banana bread.

She served in various capacities in several churches and street missions throughout greater Harlem and Bronx area as a: caregiver, counselor, teacher, preacher, and evangelist. She always had a smile and encouraging word for everyone that needed one. She was a light to those who needed light and gave hope to those who needed hope. This is her legacy and she fulfilled the commission that God had given her in this lifetime.
Gloria McNeal will forever live on through the lives and hearts of her son, Elijah McNeal, his wife Ruth Sylvert-McNeal, grandson Elijah Acholonu, granddaughters Elani and Eliana McNeal; Niece, Carmen Nedd her children, Robert Nedd, Shamair Nedd, Syiann Weaver, Skeeter Nedd, Mahilia Nedd, Diamond Nedd; Adrieann Mapp, her children: Isaiah Thomas, Anya and Tia Mapp; Nephews: Sylvester Nedd, Aaron Nedd, Jason Mapp; God-daughter, Leah Broughton her children: Kayden and Kyrie Sterling; KellyAnn Harvey, her daughter Madison Dawson, Emerald Harvey. The remaining families: Ansine, Broughton, Bruno, Curtis, Daniel, Dukes, Mapp, Martin, Roscher, Smith, Surin, Sylvert, Thomas, and Walker, as well as Gospel Mission Pentecostal Church, Full Gospel Tabernacle, and Tabernacle of Joy Seventh-day Adventist Church families.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her brothers Joseph Mapp, George, Mapp, and sister Nellie Beazer.
