Obituary for Henderson "Jack" Purser

Henderson "Jack" Purser
Henderson “Jack” Purser was born in Pocahontas, MS on Tuesday, April 10, 1934 to Henderson Purser and Mary Webster. He was not only given his father’s name but his father's nickname “Jack” as well. His father was a master tailor. This most certainly was the root of his fondness for exquisitely tailored suits. Perhaps the charisma he demonstrated throughout his life was also picked up from his Dad.

Jack often fondly reflected on his younger years living on a farm in Mississippi and learning about crops and farm management.

As a child his family moved to New York City. This is where he met and married Helen Marie Vines on November 14, 1959 and where they raised their children.

Known for being an industrious worker, Jack was employed by the VA Hospital and New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation from which he retired.

Anyone who knew Jack admired his hearty appetite. Some of his favorite foods included his wife’s peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.

In later years when Jack’s health began to fail, he faced his many medical appointments with the same diligence as he did all during his career, never ever wanting to be late.

He never complained about the challenges his failing health presented. For example, he loved sports. When he could no longer see to watch a baseball game or basketball game, he was content with just hearing the commentary with Jeff describing each player so he could get a clearer mental image of the team. That love of sports is carried on not only by his many grandsons but by his many granddaughters as well.

Another sport that Jack enjoyed was boxing. In fact, he was trained as a boxer by Angelo Dundee, famously known for training World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali.

From athletic endeavors, to real estate and other business ventures, Jack would always mention he achieved all his personal goals. He was a man who pursued his passions and his dreams. When he had an idea, or wanted to try something out, he did not stop until it came to fruition. He lived his life without ever complaining about the challenges or disappointments. Even when he became ill in his later years, he would always exclaim “what can I say?” – truly a reminder for all of us living to just go with the punches. He was known as a fighter for living.

In addition to his beloved parents, he was preceded in death by his 9 siblings.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Marie Purser, their children Joyce Layne (McDonald), Jacqueline Purser, Jeffrey Purser (Josie), and Joel Purser (Tijuana), a niece Kim Lloyd, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
