Obituary for Joaquin Solis

Joaquin Solis-Torres, of the Bronx, NY and Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, died peacefully at home surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer, on the morning of April 5, 2017. He was 94.

Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Mr. Solis was the son of the late Jose Solis and the late Juana Torres. He proudly served as a United States Army staff sergeant in World War II, stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. He later worked as a mechanic for Chrysler in New York, NY where he retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service. Through family friends, Mr. Solis met the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Alejandra Kercado-Nieves. They were married on June 17, 1954 in Michigan. His proudest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife Alejandra and children Sylvia Solis-Berwa (Edward) of the Bronx, NY, Sandra Solis (Stephen) of the Bronx, NY, and Marcus Solis (Christina) of Dobbs Ferry, NY. He leaves behind grandchildren Christina Evangelista (Angelo), Janah Cox, Daniel Ferrer, Ava Solis and Maya Solis. He is also survived by his sister Aurea Solis and many adoring nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is predeceased by his sisters Marta Solis and Irma Solis.

Mr. Solis was an avid Mets fan who loved to tinker in his meticulous tool shed, tend to his lime and avocado trees and laugh heartily with his grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his warm heart, mischievous sense of humor and undying love and devotion to his wife.

As per Mr. Solis’ wishes, a private family gathering was held on April 5th. A memorial service will be planned for later in the year. Memorial donations can be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the American Cancer Society.
